Body Fat Percentage Formula

This calculator uses the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method. The method estimates body fat percentage using height and body circumference measurements. Measurements entered in centimeters are converted to inches before applying the formula.

Male Formula 86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76
Female Formula 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387

How to Measure Your Body

Men generally need height, waist circumference, and neck circumference. Women also need hip circumference. Stand naturally and use a flexible measuring tape. Keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin. Try to measure under similar conditions each time.

Body Fat Percentage vs. BMI

BMI is calculated from height and weight and does not directly distinguish between fat and muscle. Body fat percentage estimates the proportion of your total body weight that is fat, providing additional body composition information that BMI alone cannot provide.

Important Note

This calculator provides an estimate based on body measurements and does not replace professional body composition testing or medical evaluation. Hydration, measurement technique, body shape, physical activity, and individual differences can affect the result.

What Is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage (BF%) is the proportion of your total body weight that consists of fat. Compared with body weight alone, body fat percentage provides additional information about the relationship between fat tissue and non-fat tissue. It is commonly used for fitness, weight management, and body composition assessment.

How Is Body Fat Percentage Calculated for Men?

Male body fat percentage can be estimated using height, waist circumference, and neck circumference. This calculator uses the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method, which estimates body fat based on the relationship between body circumference measurements and height.

How Is Body Fat Percentage Calculated for Women?

Female body fat percentage can be estimated using height, waist circumference, neck circumference, and hip circumference. This calculator uses the U.S. Navy Body Fat Method, which includes hip circumference in the calculation for women.

What Is a Normal Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat reference ranges vary depending on sex, age, fitness level, and measurement method. Men and women generally have different body fat ranges, so a single body fat percentage should not be used to evaluate everyone.

What Is the Difference Between Body Fat Percentage and BMI?

BMI is primarily based on height and weight, while body fat percentage estimates how much of your total body weight is fat. Because BMI cannot distinguish between fat and muscle, people with high muscle mass may have a higher BMI while still having a relatively low body fat percentage.

Body Fat Calculator FAQs

How accurate is a body fat calculator?

This method provides an estimate rather than a direct measurement. Results can be affected by measurement location, measurement technique, body shape, hydration, and individual differences. It can be useful for general reference and tracking trends, but it does not replace more precise methods such as DEXA or professional body composition testing.

Why do women need to enter hip circumference?

The U.S. Navy Body Fat Method uses different formulas for men and women. The female formula includes waist, hip, and neck measurements, so hip circumference is required when estimating body fat percentage for women.

How is fat mass calculated?

Estimated fat mass is calculated from body weight and body fat percentage. The formula is: Fat Mass = Body Weight × Body Fat Percentage ÷ 100. For example, if your weight is 70 kg and your body fat percentage is 20%, your estimated fat mass is about 14 kg.

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass is your total body weight minus estimated fat mass. It includes muscle, bones, water, organs, and other non-fat tissues. The formula is: Lean Body Mass = Body Weight − Fat Mass.
